Beaches of Mauritius

All beaches in Mauritius are heavenly beautiful with splendid white sand and crystal-clear water in the most various bluish tones.

Baie du Tamarin
This bay located at the mouth of Tamarin River, in a beautiful landscape is one of the major centres of surfing in Mauritius. Gigantic waves roll to the bay almost over the whole year.
Huge surf comes right through a break in the surrounding coral reef and finds its way to the Bay of Tamarin on Mauritius' southwest shore. Because of the topography of the island at this point, the breakers can be sweet. But don't count your surfers, just yet.

They are few and far between, mostly because Tamarin Bay, or Baie du Tamarin, is shallow salt flats. Yes, the beach is good enough, and there are some extended facilities and amenities nearby. But Tamarin Bay has sort of a rough around the edges feel for Mauritius.

Nonetheless, Tamarin Bay Beach is worth visiting. There lies some grand landscape, beyond the palm and casuarina trees. Near by you will find the forest and mountains - well, part of the volcano that was here eons ago. It’s worth the time to check it out by trekking to the trees and taking to the nature at its best.
You'll see Montage du Rempart across the river. Tamarin Bay is special in its own way - especially if you want to boogie board or surf.

Tamarin Bay BEACH INDEX:
Sand : Medium grained, coral/rock based.
Facilities : None close.
Shade : Coconut palms.
Sports : The main sport here is surfing, but no rentals available at the beach.
Notes : Beware of surrounding salt ponds which can give off a little odor depending on the tide level.

Baie du Tombeau : 15 minutes drive from Port Louis. Beach dense with cocos.

Belle Mare : white sandy beach with a deep lagoon at the east coast. The tourism centre extends to Trou d'Eau Douce.

Blue Bay : long beach (Pointe d' Esny to Pointe Corps de Garde) with white sand and crystal-clear ice blue water .Suitable for sailing, surfing and snorkeling.

Cap Malheureux : Small fishing village at the north top of the island, with an incredibly wonderful view of the little islands Ile Plate, Ile Ronde and Coin de Mire. The wonderfully located graveyard and the chapel on the beach are significant for a photo. The name Cap Malheureux arose after the Englishmen landed secretly there on September 2nd, 1810 and expelled the Frenchmen from Mauritius.

Flic-en Flac : long beach on the west coast with an attractive lagoon and a lot of tourism offers such as apartment houses, restaurants, snacks and shops.

Grand Baie : One of the major attraction tourist centre in Mauritius with a variety of accommodations, water sports offers (excluding offers of the hotels), shops and superb restaurants. One also finds a choice of discotheques and bars there. Numerous suppliers organize tours across the island and excursions on the sea; for example going to the island Coin de Mire. The beaches lie in a large (deep to the country outgoing bay) which are sheltered from wind and waves.

Ile aux Cerfs : small blissful island at the East coast which can be reached by boats from Pointe Maurice (about 30 minute’s trip). Impressive white sand and lagoons with water in all blue tones. Water sports offers and a restaurant are available. One meets wild living deer at raids over the island. Ile aux Cerfs is one of the most popular and well known stunning places in the Indian Ocean. Don't fail paying a visit there!

Mont Choisy : Beautiful long beach at the northern coast full of Filao trees.

Péreybère : A small beach at the coastal road, between Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux, appreciated by mauritians. The water is deep and clear.

Pointe aux Piments : Extended and quiet beach.

Rivière Noire : the centre of deep-sea fishing in Mauritius.

Trou-aux-Biches : one of the most fine-looking beaches in Mauritius. It is mainly appropriate for children since the water isn't deep there. It is also a nice place to snorkel, especially for beginners because you can reach the lovely coral-reefs and a selection of unusual fishes easily after only 50 - 100 m swim. The Indian temple of Maheswarnath in Triolet can be reached within a short walking distance of about 30 minutes.
